 ROUGH or SMOOTH

 How do YOU like it?

It probably wouldn’t be the wisest thing to let two soap stars guide you on a journey across Southern Africa! You’d have to be slightly crazy….But just imagine how much fun it would be to follow them to the most eclectic places, meet the most eccentric locals, attempt adrenaline pumping adventures and indulge in the ultimate luxury experiences.

Well stop imagining, because a brand new TV documentary is about to take you on the trip of a lifetime.

“Rof of Spog”, a 13 part series, is an adventurous and sophisticated new take on the Travel, Lifestyle and Food genre, exploring Southern Africa in a way that’s never been done before.

Actors Paul du Toit and Terence Bridgett are old friends, and are well known for their television work, but what audiences might not know is how passionate they both are about food, travel and the people and places of Southern Africa. They do, however, live out this shared passion in very different ways.

Paul is rough; happiest with braai smoke in his eyes and a freshly dived crayfish steaming in kelp. He has climbed Kilimanjaro, and surfed, dived and canoed all over the world. Terence, however, as befits the doyenne of the social pages, is smooth, preferring his crustacean served with the requisite Sauvignon Blanc. This 20 year friendship provides it’s fair share of comedy – and a healthy dose of drama too!

Paul and Terence have recently launched their production company – Fanagalo Films, and with ‘Rof of Spog’ they’ve chosen to partner with established Executive Producer (and old friend) Marc Schwinges from Underdog Productions and have asked the multitalented expert Johan Hendriksz to direct the show. So, with their first foray into television production, Bridgett and du Toit have redefined the format of the lifestyle/travel show genre, in an attempt to not only reinvent the wheel, but steer it in a completely unique direction.

The premise is simple. Every destination has its extremes: Dangerous or glamorous, up market or down-to-earth. You might prefer Paul’s backpacker digs and adventure activities or Terence’s more genteel, sophisticated 5-star way of doing things. This odd couple will guide audiences to southern Africa’s most remarkable and varied destinations; Paul dragging a reluctant (and often screaming) Terence through the rougher experiences while Terence nudges a (perpetually under dressed) Paul though the finer options available in the same places. An experience that’s never predictable, but always deeply entertaining. Hence their tag line: ‘Rof of Spog – Hoe wil JY dit he?’ (‘Rough or Smooth – How do YOU like it?’)

And unpredictable they most certainly are, as both du Toit and Bridgett tend to prefer the less mainstream points on the map. They spear mullet in the Kosi Bay fish traps, ski in the Maluti Mountains, embark on a quest for Modjadji the rain queen in Limpopo, do loxion kulcha, Soweto style and reveal their personal stories as they sing with Terence’s alma mater, the Drakensberg Boys Choir and Paul paddles the Dusi canoe marathon. Their varied perspectives not only allow viewers to celebrate our differences, but highlight the shared humanity of Southern Africa.

So if it’s documentary, travel, lifestyle food or adventure you’re after, Rof of Spog offers the whole package. Add Terence and Paul into the mix – with their relentless banter – and you’ve got the recipe for accessible, informative and entertaining television.

‘Rof of Spog’ starts Friday the 9th of December at 18:00 on SABC 2.
